Kaolin is a clay mineral used across several industries — paper, paints, ceramics, and cosmetics — for a different reason in each. The breakdown below covers what it actually does in each industry.
What is it?
Kaolin is composed primarily of kaolinite, a hydrous aluminum silicate (Al₂Si₂O₅(OH)₄) with a layered structure — stacked sheets of silica and alumina held together by hydrogen bonds. A well-formed kaolinite particle takes the shape of a flat, roughly hexagonal plate, typically 0.1–10 micrometers across. It’s a soft mineral, rated 2–2.5 on the Mohs hardness scale (ScienceDirect Topics).
For paper-grade material specifically, TAPPI T 646 sets the standard method for measuring brightness — high-brightness grades measure above 90 on the G.E. scale.
Why should I use it?
- Distinct technical roles. Its fine, plate-like particles take on a different job depending on the manufacturing stage they’re used at — see the Paper industry breakdown below for a concrete example.

How its role changes by industry
- Paper: two separate roles depending on manufacturing stage — a filler inside the pulp itself, and a coating pigment applied to the surface afterward to improve brightness and printability.
- Paints & Coatings: an extender, valued for improving weathering resistance and durability. Where coverage and cost are the only priorities, Calcium Carbonate is the more suitable choice instead.
- Ceramics: the core plasticity agent that gives a ceramic body its shapability before firing — but not sufficient on its own; it has to be balanced with Feldspar (as a flux) and Quartz (as a structural filler), or the body won’t vitrify correctly during firing.
- Cosmetics & Personal Care: an opacifier/filler and a common alternative to Talc, valued for higher oil absorption (see Limitations).
Limitations — when it isn’t the right choice
- In Cosmetics, choosing it over Talc is often specifically about sourcing, not just texture. Kaolin and Talc serve a similar slip/opacifier role, and formulators reaching for Kaolin instead of Talc are frequently doing so to avoid the asbestos-contamination concerns associated with Talc (see the Talc page for that history) — not purely for a texture or performance advantage.
