What is it?
Bauxite is the primary ore refined into alumina. Per 2024 U.S. Geological Survey data, an estimated 76% of bauxite consumed in the U.S. was refined via the Bayer process into alumina or aluminum hydroxide, with the remainder going into products such as abrasives, cement, chemicals, proppants, refractories, and as a slag adjuster in steel mills.

Limitations — when it isn’t the right choice
- Below a certain alumina-to-silica ratio, bauxite becomes uneconomical to process by standard Bayer technology. A peer-reviewed 2009 review of high-silica bauxite processing found that the alumina-to-silica (Al₂O₃/SiO₂, or “A/S”) ratio is generally kept above about 7 for economical Bayer processing, with some researchers suggesting a threshold above 8. Reactive silica — mainly from kaolinite — lowers this ratio and causes excessive caustic soda consumption and alumina losses during Bayer processing. This threshold is a general industry benchmark discussed across high-silica bauxite processing literature; it should not be assumed to apply identically to every ore body without checking its own mineralogical assay.
