PTA and MEG are feedstocks used to make polyester and PET. PTA stands for purified terephthalic acid; MEG stands for monoethylene glycol. Their prices are relevant cost inputs, but a delivered PET quotation also reflects the grade, contract and logistics. This guide explains the relationship, not a live price index.
What are PTA and MEG used for?
IndianOil’s PTA overview identifies polyester and PET applications in conjunction with MEG. Indorama Ventures’ feedstock overview describes the raw-material chain and MEG’s role in polyester and PET production. PTA and MEG are feedstocks; they are not alternative names for the finished PET resin.
How should you read a feedstock price signal?
A PTA or MEG price observation needs a market, date, currency, unit and source. Without those details, it cannot be compared reliably with another observation or a PET quotation. A historical change in one country is not a current price for every buyer.
Feedstock prices vs. delivered PET cost
Separate the upstream feedstock observation from the resin quotation and the final delivered cost. Check the PET grade, quantity, delivery terms, destination and quote validity. A feedstock price movement is useful context; it does not prove the amount or timing of a change in a particular supply contract.
What should a buyer monitor?
- Comparable, dated PTA and MEG observations from identified sources.
- PET quotations for the same grade and commercial scope.
- The validity period and adjustment mechanism, if any, in the actual quotation or contract.
- Freight and other delivery conditions that can change independently of the resin.
- Inventory and delivery requirements for the manufacturing process.
Do not assume a fixed number of days for a feedstock movement to reach a resin or fibre price. Contract terms and market conditions need to be considered. Undated currency conversions and a single event are not a forecasting rule.
Does understanding PTA and MEG select the right PET grade?
No. Cost context does not replace the application specification. Review PET resin applications and grade requirements alongside the cost information. If you need to discuss a material, provide the intended PET application and requirements. A feedstock explanation does not imply an offer to supply PTA or MEG.
