Pipe and profile extrusion share an extrusion process but not one material specification. Begin with the product's service, governing standard and qualification requirements. In particular, a qualified PE pressure-pipe compound is a different purchasing decision from a PVC formulation for a non-pressure pipe or a window profile.
Classify the product before the resin
State whether the product is a pressure pipe, non-pressure drainage pipe, conduit or profile, and identify its intended service. Record the applicable standard and edition, market requirements and the customer's additional specification. Nominal dimensions alone do not establish the required material qualification.
Describe wall construction, dimensions, color, expected exposure and joining method where relevant. For a profile, include its function, appearance, dimensional tolerances and required mechanical or weathering tests. For pipe, identify the complete qualification and production-control plan rather than reducing acceptance to extrusion appearance.
Record the existing approved compound or formulation and the equipment used. Explain whether the project concerns a new product, a supplier alternative or a process issue. This distinction determines which prior approvals remain relevant and which must be reassessed.
Keep pressure compounds and formulations distinct
Borouge presents Borsafe products as application-specific pipe solutions, including precompounded black PE100 products. Omya describes mineral options for non-pressure PVC pipe applications. These are distinct scopes. Neither source supports qualifying a generic HDPE resin or a filler-modified blend as a pressure-pipe compound.
| Product route | Material question | Evidence required |
|---|---|---|
| PE pressure pipe | Which complete compound is qualified for the intended service? | Current grade documents, applicable classification and product qualification. |
| Non-pressure PVC pipe | Which complete formulation meets the specified pipe requirements? | Resin and additive specifications, formulation record and finished-pipe tests. |
| PVC profile | Does the formulation meet dimensional, appearance and service requirements? | Profile-specific tests and documented processing evaluation. |
| Other polymer or pipe structure | Does the proposed material fall within the governing specification? | Product-specific design and qualification evidence, not assumptions from PE or PVC. |
PE100 is not a label to infer from density, melt flow or a statement that the resin is HDPE. Request the actual compound's classification and documents. Do not make unapproved additions, color changes or recycled-input substitutions to a qualified compound. The relevant specification and approval process govern any change.
Review the complete PVC system
A PVC extrusion enquiry should describe the resin and complete additive system: stabilizers, lubricants, processing aids, modifiers, pigments and any mineral filler. Record which inputs are fixed and which are candidates for change. Evaluating only the PVC resin overlooks formulation differences that can alter the processing comparison.
When calcium carbonate is under consideration, request its particle distribution, surface-treatment description and supplier recommendation for the application. Review treated versus untreated calcium carbonate for a controlled comparison. No loading percentage or surface treatment in that guide establishes compliance of a finished pipe.
Agree what the trial should demonstrate: processing consistency, dimensions, surface appearance and the specified mechanical or service tests. Record dry-blend preparation, storage and material history. If a processing-aid or lubricant adjustment accompanies the mineral change, report the entire formulation change.
Qualify the extruded product
- Identify the standard, service conditions and mandatory acceptance limits before screening materials.
- Collect current TDS, SDS, compound classification where applicable and required use-specific documents.
- Define an approved control material and a traceable candidate formulation or complete compound.
- Run documented, equipment-approved trials; record output, dimensions, surface observations and all material or setting changes.
- Apply the specified finished-product tests, including service or long-term qualification where required.
- Review repeatability, production controls and supplier consistency before approving a substitution.
A smooth extrusion trial cannot replace long-term or application-specific tests required by the governing standard. The manufacturer must define test methods and acceptance limits with the responsible technical reviewer. This guide lists evaluation steps; it neither issues certification nor invents results.
Keep rejected samples and record the reason for rejection. If a candidate is promising but incomplete, list the missing test or document explicitly instead of treating it as an approved alternative. Traceability should connect the tested compound or formulation to the proposed commercial supply.
Prepare the technical enquiry
Send the product type and dimensions, intended service, governing standard and current approved material. Attach the required document and test list, line description and reason for replacement. Clarify whether a complete compound is needed or whether a formulation input is being evaluated.
Use the HDPE, PVC and calcium carbonate references for material-category context. They are not lists of approved pressure-pipe grades. A commercial enquiry must separately confirm the candidate's identity, specification, available documents and qualification scope.
