The Problem

Calcium Carbonate Particle Size and Eggshell Quality in Layer Hens

Why limestone particle size, not calcium content alone, determines eggshell strength in laying hens, and how gizzard retention time explains why coarser calcium carbonate outperforms fine particles for overnight shell formation.

Two limestone sources with identical calcium content can produce measurably different eggshell quality in the same flock — because calcium solubility itself isn’t affected by particle size, but how quickly that calcium becomes available to the hen during the shell-formation cycle is, and that timing is what eggshell strength actually depends on.

Root Causes

Eggshell formation takes roughly 12-14 hours and occurs mainly overnight, while the hen is not eating — which means the calcium available for shell deposition during that window has to come from calcium already digested and stored, not from feed the bird is actively consuming at the time. Particle size determines how long calcium carbonate stays in the digestive tract before it dissolves: fine particles pass through the gastrointestinal tract in roughly 2-3 hours, while particles above roughly 2 mm are retained longer in the gizzard and dissolve more slowly, extending the period over which calcium becomes available to the bird.

This gizzard-retention mechanism is why coarser limestone particles, fed appropriately timed before the night period, are documented to support stronger shell formation than fine particles alone — the fine particles dissolve and are absorbed too quickly to sustain calcium availability through the full overnight shell-formation window, while the slower-dissolving coarse fraction continues supplying calcium later into the cycle when the fine fraction has already been depleted. Research substituting fine limestone with larger-particle limestone in laying hen diets has documented measurable increases in eggshell percentage, thickness, density, and breaking strength, particularly in older hens where shell quality naturally declines with age.

What This Means for Raw Material Selection

Because particle size timing, not calcium content, is the variable that governs shell-formation performance, calcium carbonate sourced purely on calcium assay percentage is an incomplete specification for layer feed. Two limestone sources with the same nominal calcium content can deliver meaningfully different eggshell outcomes if their particle size distributions differ, since the coarser-particle source sustains calcium availability later into the overnight formation window that the finer source cannot.

For a buyer formulating layer feed, the practical implications are: specify calcium carbonate particle size distribution, not just calcium assay, against the production goal — a blend of fine and coarse particle sizes is documented to support both immediate nutritional needs and sustained overnight calcium availability better than either fraction alone; and recognize that particle size becomes more consequential, not less, in older hens, where documented research shows eggshell quality benefits from mixed or larger-particle calcium sources are more pronounced as birds age and natural shell quality declines.
