ASTM C33/C33M addresses grading and quality requirements for aggregates used in concrete. For a sand source, identify the edition and project requirements, then review representative test reports. Silica content alone does not establish compliance, and this guide does not replace the standard’s acceptance criteria.
What does ASTM C33 cover?
The official ASTM C33/C33M page describes requirements for concrete aggregates. Use the edition specified by the project; a link to one edition should not be treated as proof that it is the edition required by every contract.
How should you assess concrete sand grading?
Review a documented sieve analysis against the specified requirements. Keep the sample identification, source, test method and date with the result. A pass/fail statement without the supporting report is not enough to explain whether the result represents the sand you will receive.
What does fineness modulus tell you?
Fineness modulus is a grading-related index, not a complete description of the aggregate. Review it alongside the sieve analysis and the project’s requirements. Do not use a generic range or a simplified sieve rule from a web summary as an acceptance criterion: the relevant standard text and project specification govern the decision.
Which documents should you request?
- The required standard edition and project-specific acceptance requirements.
- The source and representative sample identification.
- The sieve analysis and the associated grading information requested by the project.
- The quality test reports required by the specification.
- A procedure for reviewing new deliveries or a change of source.
Does high silica content prove ASTM C33 compliance?
No. A chemistry value describes one aspect of a material; ASTM C33 concerns aggregate grading and quality. Evaluate the evidence for the intended concrete application rather than applying a general “silica sand” label to every specification.
What should you do when the source changes?
Compare the new source’s reports with the project requirements and the evidence for the qualified source. Review the proposed sand in the actual mix-design process before assuming equivalent performance. This is a qualification checklist, not a claim that any PLAXRAW grade already meets ASTM C33.
For material context, see silica sand applications and selection. If you need to discuss a requirement, provide the project specification and available test reports.
